Philip’s Bird that Flew the Creek

We got set up on birds at daylight right off the limb. Â We set up, Philip tree yelped once and the birds gobbled and pitched down and came right to us… Text book. Â Too good to be true. Â Jacob was filming and even though the birds got 10 yards away, Jacob never could see them. Â This was one of the many birds that has come within shotgun range and got away because of the camera.
As we were walking out, we heard one gobble a ways off across a big creek. Â We went as close as we could and got to the edge of the creek so we could shoot him on the other side if he came in. Â We called once and he was on his way. Five minutes later we could see him coming straight to us from the left bordering the creek. Â Just a few more steps and Philip would have a shot on camera. Â Instead, the turkey flew the creek and circled around us looking for what he thought was the hen. Â Now we were in trouble. Â He was directly behind us only about 30 yards away.
We let him walk away and then got set back up facing his direction and started calling again. Â He turned around and came right back in. Â Philip smoked him at 30 yards.
What we learned: Â Never say Never… Â People always told us turkeys won’t fly creeks to get to a hen. Â Maybe most of the time they won’t, but if you find the right bird that is in the right mood, he will do almost anything to get to a hen.
