Jacob’s first Rio

Mr. Donnie Fugate of Aspen Ridge Outfitters invited us out to their place to turkey hunt just outside of Hays, Kansas and to say they have birds would be an understatement.  Everywhere we went there were turkeys!

We were only on the property about an hour with winds blowing 30-40 miles/hour when Donnie let out a call and got a bird to gobble in the next field over.  After calling for a while and the bird not moving, we decided to go to the field and check it out.  Philip and Jacob crawled to the field and saw the long beard 60 yards away strutting for a hen.

After a while Donnie sliped back in the woods and got aggressive.  Within seconds, the long beard and hen were headed our way.  Jacob let them get to about 15 yards and smoked his first Rio!

What we learned:  field turkeys can be hard and sometimes it is best to stay away, but if conditions are hard and birds aren’t gobbling it might be the only option.  In this situation Donnie was able to slip back and do some light calling to get the birds to walk by Jacob looking for the hen way back in the woods.

You forgot to mention how much “more” fun it would have been if one of the best hunters you know (Clayton) was able to make it!!!
What I learned was make sure you have your hunter Ed card before planning a hunt out west! :)
